Compatibility
STE is designed for the Java SE (Java Standard Edition) platform, and is therefore compatible with most popular operating systems: Windows, Mac OS X, and many Linux distributions.
However, STE behaves differently on each system, in order to better integrate with your other native applications. This page explains some of those differences.
Windows
- Windows-specific shortcuts
- Undo: Ctrl+Z (also works on Linux)
- Redo: Ctrl+Y (also works on Linux)
- Some other shortcuts:
- Close application: Alt+F4 (this works on Mac and Linux too, so not Windows-specific)
- Dialog that allows you to configure STE is named "Settings"
- Export shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+S) does not work
- Can be integrated into the Windows 7 taskbar, with an icon. Instructions coming soon!
Mac OS X
- Mac-specific shortcuts
- Undo: Command+Z
- Redo: Command+Shift+Z
- Other shortcuts use Command instead of Control
- Close application: Command+Q
- Open Preferences: Command+comma
- Dialog that allows you to configure STE is named "Preferences"
- Redistributed as a Mac OS X application bundle, and can therefore be easily added to your Applications folder or dropped onto your dock. Instructions coming soon!
- Brushed metal appearance
Issues:
- Some keyboard shortcuts conflict with Mac shortcuts
- Function keys (F1 - F12), but can be disabled in System Preferences
- Extension shortcuts do not work
Linux
- Linux-specific shortcuts
- Undo: Ctrl+Z (also works on Windows)
- Redo: Ctrl+Y (also works on Windows)
- Dialog that allows you to configure STE is named "Settings"
- Export shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+S) does not work
- Can be integrated into the Linux taskbar, with an icon. Instructions coming soon!
- There are some issues when using OpenJDK; the official Sun JDK is highly recommended (though usually it needs to be manually installed as OpenJDK is the default on most distributions)
