STE is a cross-platform application, meaning that you can install it on almost any operating system: Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. From the main website, you can download the latest version.

Prerequisites

As STE is written using the Java programming language, it requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed on your computer. Most likely, you already have this.

Officially, Java 1.6.0 and above is supported. If you are using an earlier version, some features of the application may not work correctly. You can find out which version you are using by typing java -version into terminal (command prompt on Windows).

If you believe that you do not have the JRE installed, or may be using an older version, you can download the latest release of the JRE from here: Java Runtime Environment. If you require any help with the installation, please ask in STE's General Discussion Forum.

Installation tutorial

  1. Download the latest version of STE from the download page, making sure that you download the correct file for your operating system.
  2. Unzip the archive to get either "STE.app" (Mac OS X) or "STE.jar" (Windows/Linux).
  3. Drag and drop the file to wherever you want to install it on your computer (for Mac, we recommend the Applications folder).
  4. Double-click on the file to run the editor. No installation is necessary.

Integrating it with your system

After installing the application, you may want to make STE more easily accessible on your operating system. Specific instructions are below.

Linux (Ubuntu 10.10)

Note to Linux users

None of the open-source versions of the JRE are officially supported. Whilst the editor will run, it's possible that you may experience a few layout bugs that are not present in the JRE from Sun/Oracle.

If you are using the Ubuntu operating system, please check that you have the correct JRE installed as the default is to install the open-source version. There have been a couple of reported problems with using that JRE in the past, and all of them were solved by using the official JRE instead.

Mac OS X (Snow Leopard 10.6.x)

Coming soon!

YouTube has problems with MOV files, so the audio is missing from these :( I will re-upload with audio soon and edit this page to point to the new videos.
